Councillors in favour of business rate changes

FIGURES that show shops will be better off due to changes in business rates have been welcomed by the deputy leader of Portsmouth City Council.

Cllr Luke Stubbs said: ‘The government has recognised that the high street is being squeezed - and not just by online retailers, but also by supermarkets.

‘A reduction in business rates will help, but a revival also depends on landlords scaling back their demands.’

Figures from property consultancy Allsop suggests the retail sector will see bills cut. In Portsmouth, it estimates this could save shops 34 per cent.
