GENEROUS Portsmouth shoppers helped raise thousands of pounds for Help for Heroes.

The Debenhams store in Commercial Road has been overwhelmed with donations.

Restaurant supervisor Tina Alexander said: ‘I want to say thanks to all our customers.’

The store has been selling wristbands and using charity boxes to raise the cash.

‘In one week alone we raised £1,500. Last year we raised £3,094 and this year we are hoping to smash that figure.’

Debenhams staff dressed in army attire encouraged people to come and buy merchandise from the stall outside the shop. Inside the store, people were asked to donate £1 after their meal in the restaurant.

Tina was not surprised with the great support they received from Portsmouth residents.

‘We are a naval city so I think that’s why it is so well supported,’ added Tina.

The Debenhams store has been raising money for the charity for about four years.
