A DISCOUNT food store could open near a new major supermarket in the city.

Plans have been submitted to Portsmouth City Council to split into four the existing B&Q store at the Pompey Centre.

The hardware store would remain in place in the southern part of the building and garden centre.

But a new food retailer would move into the most northerly of the proposed units, with two non-food retailers for the other two units. The application to split the unit will be decided today.

It comes as the Tesco superstore by Fratton Park is undergoing construction.
