Engineering apprentice in national contest

AN ENGINEERING apprentice is taking part in the regional heats of the national challenge.

Oliver Bodenham, 20, is an engineering apprentice from Portsmouth, who is currently working in Waterlooville for defence business, Serco.

He is part of a team of eight apprentices from the company taking part in the Brathay Apprentice Challenge – in a bid to become the apprentice team of the year.

Tracey Cobbett, from Serco, said: ‘Ollie is incredibly passionate about apprenticeships and recently job-shadowed our chief executive, Rupert Soames, during National Apprenticeship Week.’

The team has completed visits to schools and they redecorated The Base Youth Centre in Hook as part of the challenge, which aims to promote apprenticeships.

Oliver is also campaigning for pupils to consider taking up an apprenticeship after school.

Oliver said: ‘Honestly, the best part about doing an apprenticeship is essentially getting paid to get your qualifications.’

The winners will be announced on June 15.
