Persimmon Homes wants to build the 26 houses on the site of the former Purbrook School playing fields.

Despite planning procedures being in the early stages, several residents have spoken of their worries about the construction of a path that would give the new homes access through where they live in Vancouver Avenue and Athens Close.

Debbie Waters of Vancouver Avenue said: ‘There is no need that I can see for footpath. They can walk along the main road like anyone else.

‘We do not need more children or teenagers making trouble in our area by adding footpaths into our quiet development.’

Other nearby residents also object to the footpath plans, saying it will have an effect on their peaceful area.

Adam McEvoy said: ‘We enjoy a relatively quiet living space and presumably we would see more people using our development as a through road on to Stakes Hill Road as well as encouraging others to use our open spaces.’

He added: ‘I can see no benefits for the residents of Purbrook Place.’

Ronald Saurin, also of Vancouver Avenue, agreed, saying the footpath was unnecessary. He said: ‘There is no reason why it should be built, as residents in the new area can use the main access to Stakes Road.’

Havant borough councillor Gary Hughes, whose ward is Purbrook, believes development on the site was inevitable. He said: ‘It’s too early to say whether I am in favour of the plans, but it is no surprise that planning application has been made due to the popularity of other houses on the site.’

A Persimmon Homes spokesman said: ‘We will continue to work closely with the planning authority and the community to ensure we are able to deliver much-needed new properties, including affordable homes, for local people.’

The consultation period for the development ends tonight, and a decision will be made on July 14.
