A DATA storage company is using golf as a way of whittling down the hundreds of candidates it expects to get on a new recruitment drive.

Peer 1 Hosting, which has its flagship data centre at Langstone Technology Park in Havant, is doubling its UK workforce to 60 after three years of operation.

The new recruits will be graduates looking for IT sales and technical support roles, and the centre will expand into new office space in 2012 to support its growth.

It has doubled its growth each year it has been operating in the country.

The company has already hired an internal recruiter to lead the drive.

Having built an internal golf course last year, they will be testing the skills of would-be staff over a round of pitch and putt as candidates are assessed on a wide range of skills including multi-tasking, planning, adaptability and winning mentality.

Dominic Monkhouse, EMEA managing director at Peer 1 Hosting, said: ‘For every 100 CVs we receive, we hire one talented individual which means that candidates need to stand out as we only employ the best of the best.’

‘Recruiting and retaining quality staff is the single biggest factor behind the unprecedented growth the business has seen in our first three years.

‘Customers want to buy award-winning service and only brilliant staff can deliver the superior care factor to make that happen.’

The facility in Havant was only launched in November, with much fanfare.

More than 700 companies have signed up to be part of the Peer 1 Hosting data centre, which holds thousands of servers containing classified company information as well as the addresses, bank details and passwords of customers when they shop with online retailers.

The facility also includes a mini golf green, which will be used in the firm’s recruitment drive, a dart board and a kitchen with free meals on offer for its team of 15 staff.

The centre is also the most environmentally friendly of its kind in the country.

Six roof-top coolers reduce energy emissions from the servers as part of a £35m investment.

An extra 40,000 servers will also be built in the next five years, creating up to 100 extra jobs at the centre specifically at the Havant centre.

Peer 1 Hosting’s head office is based in Southampton.
