Football-playing brothers' match in mum's memory

It is to celebrate the fact that the quintessentially British toy was created right here in Havant 60 years ago.

The fun-filled day is part of the Fun Palaces campaign, which encourages people to initiate and take part in cultural events.

The day starts at 10am and ends at 3pm and is open to everyone.

There will be a gigantic Scalextric set to play on, racing games from old to new, and sessions to learn about how Scalextric cars are made.

There will also be the chance to meet other Scalextric enthusiasts and talk to oral historians about any memories you may have of Scalextric in Havant.

We’re also going to create a Scalextric room, so are looking for anyone that has their own track and cars to bring them along to the day and help us to fill the room.

This day is part of a heritage project that The Spring is running, titled The Story of Scalextric.

The project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and includes events, exhibitions and workshops to celebrate the creation of Scalextric 60 years ago in Havant.

From September 26 until December 24, there will be an exhibition in The Spring’s upper mezzanine that follows the story of Scalextric, including a professional documentary film featuring interviews with former factory workers and tracing the development of the company, which was originally called Minimodels Ltd.

From October 1 to November 30 there will be a display of Scalextric cars in our local collection cabinets, and we will be running half-term workshops in October where children can make a moving car.

Fun Palaces is an ongoing national campaign for culture at the heart of the community with an annual weekend of events created by, for, and with local people.
