We’re running our fun quiz after Buckwells of Southsea clinched a best in class diamond award in the speciality sausage category at the 2017 Butchers Q Guild Smithfield Awards with its Winter Glow Sausage.

The Osborne Road shop came away with nine gold awards, after competing against the Q Guild’s 123 members, who submitted a record entry of 600 products.

Buckwells won the awards with its Southsea breakfast sausage, black eye lorne speciality sausage – this scored maximum marks – 6oz burger, scotch eggs, pork pie, chicken kiev kitchen-ready product, along with a brace of ready meals – old-fashion faggots and cheesy mash shepherd’s pie.

John Buckwell, who set up the business with his wife Helen in 1987, said: ‘It has been brilliant.

‘We have had a little run of awards, plus we have had the shop refitted and we are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year, so it’s all good.’

The Winter Glow is Buckwells name for its sundodger sausage – sundodger is naval slang for a submariner.

They use Thousand Hills – a Fareham supplier – for its added ingredient of an apple, chilli and cinnamon compote.

John, from Southsea, said: ‘It’s wonderful to win this award, especially to win against such high quality competition – it’s another feather in our cap.’

Buckwells has also been successful with other awards; its faggots were judged the best in Hampshire, with a 100 out of 100 score, and it was awarded Butcher of the Year in the Hampshire Life Food & Drink Awards 2016.

Now John says he’s hopeful of a win at the Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie Competition, run by Hampshire Fare, due to take place in Winchester on Wednesday.

He said: ‘The chilli gives it a little lift.

‘The same sausage has won two awards now so it must be good.’

The Winter Glow also won the Hampshire sausage of the year 2015.
