TRIBUTES have been paid to a businessman described as ‘the ultimate maverick with an enormous personality’.

Richard Cornwell, who owned two Victoriana Furniture Store branches in Marmion Road, Southsea, and a third in Petersfield, passed away last week at the age of 60.

Shortly before his death, Richard was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

His wife Julia, daughter Natasha, 30, and son Adam, 24, have paid their respects to the ‘loving’ husband and father.

Natasha, who now lives and works in London, said: ‘My dad lived with my mum in Ramsdean.

‘He was a celebrated businessman. The business is popular, but it was always more than a business to him.

‘He was really well-loved. He was a happy man and a real nature lover.

‘He was active and fun-loving and was an incredible person.’

In a statement put together by the family, Richard is described as ‘always having a sparkle in his eye’.

It said: ‘Rick was the ultimate maverick and an enormous personality, with an incomparable warmth, positivity and zest for life, and always a sparkle in his eye.

‘He made people smile and laugh like no other.

‘Rick leaves behind an adoring family, loving friends, trusted colleagues, thriving businesses, a beautiful country estate and a vibrant legacy, never to be forgotten.

‘Victoriana will continue to run in honour of Richard, as he would have wanted and we hope you continue to enjoy it as you have done so loyally over the past 30 years.

‘We thank you wholeheartedly, on his behalf, for your continued support over the years and into the future, and ask you to join us in remembering him as the incredible man and larger-than-life character that he was, and will continue to be in our hearts.’

Victoriana, which opened in 1983 in Marmion Road, will now be run by Julia in Richard’s memory.
