A PORTSMOUTH gas engineer is campaigning to raise awareness of gas safety in the home.

Steve Nathan, who runs SN Gas, says home owners are taking their lives in their hands if they don’t have their gas appliances checked every year.

His warning comes ahead of the first Gas Safety Week, running from Monday until Sunday next week, organised by Gas Safe Register, the official list of registered gas engineers.

Mr Nathan, of Wymering, said: ‘The knowledge that your gas appliances have been installed correctly is priceless to you and your family.

‘Gas safety checks are for homeowners and tenants alike. Landlords have a legal obligation to have the appliances in their properties checked every year.

‘As a homeowner you should also have your gas appliances serviced every year, just like your car.’

Mr Nathan is asking homeowners to ensure their appliances get installed and checked by engineers who are registered with Gas Safe, and he is offering half price checks and servicing next week.

He added: ‘You wouldn’t take your car to an unqualified person, so don’t use anyone who is not Gas Safe registered to work on your gas appliances.

‘By checking that your gas engineer is Gas Safe registered you can be assured that they are up to date with all current legislation.

‘And by looking at their Gas Safe ID card or the Gas Safe website you can see all the things that they are qualified to do.

‘Remember carbon monoxide is a silent killer, with no odour or taste.’
