ONE of the Volvo Ocean Race teams has chosen Gosport as its base.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing will be using Endeavour Quay as its summer race preparation and training facility.

The team’s boat, VO70 Azzam, which means determination in Arabic, is already in one of the boat sheds ready for refit work to begin.

Ian Walker, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s skipper and veteran of two Volvo Ocean Races, said: ‘We have chosen to bring Azzam and the team to Gosport because of the fantastic facilities at Endeavour Quay.

‘They have all the lifting and shore-side capabilities that we need, as well as the deep water moorings and fast access to the Solent, which is ideal for our training programme.’

The 2014-15 race route will test the world’s best professional sailors to the limit in a race between ports around the world, lasting almost nine months and 40,000 nautical miles.

It will start in Alicante, Spain, and finish in Gothenburg, Sweden.
