Alli Wiltshire welcomed the decision not to close the tip on Hayling Island.

Ms Wiltshire, who lives in Hayling, handed in a petition with more than 6,700 signatures earlier this year amid fears the recycling centre would close.

She said: ‘On the face of it, I’m delighted. Not closing the tip was my biggest aim.

‘It looks like we may end up with reduced hours or closed one day a week.

‘I think that’s a win for us. It still means we won’t have to travel to Havant.’

Ms Wiltshire now awaits the final decision by Councillor Rob Humby, who leads environment in Hampshire and will reveal his plan on how to save money across the recycling centres on July 22.

He has indicated there may be contract renegotiations and the introduction of ‘specific charges’.

Ms Wiltshire added: ‘I want to hear what his detailed plans are for Hayling.’
