Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt is the government’s minister for disabled people, health and work.

She recently visited Headway, in Portsmouth, a charity which supports people who have suffered head injuries, for its annual meeting.

Sue Bowler, the charity’s chairman of trustees, is partner and head of service for vulnerable and disabled people at law firm Coffin Mew.

Speaking following the meeting, Sue said: ‘Despite the enormity of Penny Mordaunt’s department and its nationwide reach, the stories she heard during her first visit to Headway have directly resulted in a number of significant changes that are already in progress.

‘For example, some of the recommendations in the published work, health and disability green paper, Improving Lives, include reducing Employment and Support Allowance reassessment requirements for those with long-term disabilities, and making funding available for employers to encourage them to employ people with disabilities.’

She added: ‘We are delighted and honoured with the interest Ms Mordaunt has shown in Headway.

‘The fact that a small charity like Headway Portsmouth and SE Hampshire has now had a direct impact on government policy is truly amazing.’

At Coffin Mew, Sue specialises in acting for clients who have suffered serious brain injuries as a result of either an accident or medical negligence.

She also manages the financial affairs of clients who do not have the mental capacity to do so themselves, which first brought her into contact with Headway.

Sue presented Headway with a cheque for £500 which her firm raised through charity events throughout the year.

Sue explained: ‘I quickly realised the enormous value that the support of Headway brings to those who have suffered brain injuries, their families and carers’.
