Diners at Whistler’s in Westbourne and on Hayling Island will be able to nab a serving of cod and chips, or sausage and chips, for just a quid in celebration of St George's Day.

The promotion is one masterminded by the venues for almost a decade, with owners encouraging customers to instead make a small donation to their chosen charities.

This year the takeaway in The Grove, Westbourne, will be collecting cash for the much-loved palliative care charity Rowans Hospice, which is based in Waterlooville.

Meanwhile its opposite number in Station Road, on Hayling, will take donations for the island schools body Hi-5 and the newly-established Heart of Hayling Boxing Club.

Rana Denholm, co-owner of Whistler’s, said the increasing price of fish is not making the annual spectacular an easy one to pull off, but the show must go on to uphold tradition.

‘This is probably the eighth year we are doing this and we don’t do it for money, we do this because we are part of the community,’ she said.

‘It creates a fantastic atmosphere in the shop and the community around it.’

She added: ‘What these causes are doing has totally blown us away.

‘They make a big difference to families who need their help and the lives of young people.

‘People can come in, get some fish and chips for a quid, and the hope is they won’t feel too hard done by if we ask them to pop a little bit of money in a bucket for the good causes.’

The drive has previously raised as much as £1,500 and customers can buy up to five portions each.

Both shops will be open from 11.30am until 2pm, before reopening at 5pm, until 9.30pm.
