PLANS for a 500-home development in Chichester have been approved.

Councillors on Chichester District Council gave the go-ahead to the huge development at the Shopwyke Lakes site. Developer Hanbury Properties said it believes the scheme will provide a new gateway to Chichester.

But the approval came after a long battle by residents who were angry about plans to remove the traffic lights at Oving.

If the traffic lights are taken away, crossing traffic from Oving Road to Shopwhyke Road and visa versa, will be closed off to the A27.

Almost 1,900 people signed a petition against removing the lights, but the Highways Agency supported the changes. Oving Parish Council has lodged a complaint to the district council about the procedures used to determine the application.
