A NEW premium supermarket will be a ‘welcome boost’ for the area and provide much-needed jobs, according to the leader of Fareham Borough Council.

Sean Woodward made the comments after Waitrose released figures that showed it received 919 applicants for just 75 jobs at Locks Heath Shopping Village.

The supermarket will be run by a team of 220, including the existing Co-op staff and around 75 new employees, and is due to open on Thursday, March 27.

It is part of an expansion that will see Waitrose open 26 shops this year.

Cllr Woodward said: ‘It is a fantastic opportunity for anyone to become a partner in the John Lewis organisation and I am not at all surprised to see 12 people chasing every single job opportunity. Waitrose will help up the game at the Locks Heath Shopping Village.’
