Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) confirmed it was alerted to the power cut at 7.35am. It did not provide details as about what happened but said the cut was ‘caused by third-party damage to a cable’.

The damage resulted in 433 customers initially being left without electricity with 147 still waiting for power to be restored. The company have said that engineers are still on site and they hope to have electricity reconnected to all remaining homes by 2pm.

An SSEN spokesman said: ‘We’d like to sincerely apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused by today’s fault, and thank them for their patience as our engineers work to safely restore power as quickly as possible.’

SSEN provides power to 3.7 million homes in Scotland and southern England.
