The uniquely-designed PureHold door handles have been shown to significantly increase hand hygiene in patients, staff and visitors.

In addition these hand gel delivery systems have been found to be 98.5 per cent cleaner than a standard door handle.

The hospital already has eight units in place, in the neonatal intensive care unit, maternity ward and the haematology and oncology wards, but from July onwards they’ll be available for patients to use in nine more public locations, helping to
raise the importance of good hand hygiene within the hospital.

The gel dispensing door handles were first tried in 2013, after a collaboration with entrepreneur Matt Roberts, and the Infection Prevention Team at the Queen Alexandra Hospital.

Purehold is based in Catherington.

The innovative product has now been used widely across the UK, and a number of International sites.

The installation has been funded by Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust Charitable Funds committee.
