A BOAT firm has acquired a lucrative distribution contract following support from an innovation centre.

Lee-on-the-Solent-based Blue Gee has been awarded a sole distribution agreement following a recent buy-out by 22-year-old entrepreneur Tom Farrugia.

Thanks to the deal, I am free to spend a lot more time on developing the Blue Gee brand rather than trying to sell in to individual chandleries and boatyards which is time consuming and costly in fuel

The businesses, which is based at Fareham Innovation Centre specialises in resins and hardeners for a range of repair-and-paint kits for glass fibre yachts, canoes, dinghies, catamarans and kayaks.

As a result of the deal, four new jobs have been created as a result of the five-figure deal that will now see Blue Gee products stocked in chandlery stores across the country.

Tom, from Portsmouth, said: ‘I was a one-man band from a building background, with a Blue Gee legacy customers base of some 200 to 300 customers, having acquired a great brand last year.

‘I could see the commercial potential but I was all at sea, if you pardon the pun.

‘Thankfully, after spending various sessions with Richard [May, Fareham Innovation Centre’s managing director], we pulled apart business plan and started the way up.

‘The e-commerce site is due to come on stream any day now and the sole distribution rights agreement has meant substantial orders instead of piecemeal ones of between £100 to £1,200 from various retailers.’

The entrepreneur added: ‘Thanks to the deal, I am free to spend a lot more time on developing the Blue Gee brand rather than trying to sell in to individual chandleries and boatyards which is time consuming and costly in fuel.’

New products are also in the pipeline for Blue Gee which was founded in 1985.

It is one of 43 businesses currently operating from the innovation centre which opened back in 2015 and is fully occupied.
