A HAMPSHIRE member of the European parliament has launched a campaign to clamp down on big businesses avoiding tax payments in poorer parts of the world.

Sharon Bowles says that last year large multinational companies operating in the developing world avoided paying around $165bn (£103bn) to host governments.

Hundreds of people have signed Sharon’s petition in support.

She said: ‘International aid last year was approximately $83bn (£52bn) but tax owed to countries in the developing world is twice that amount – imagine what could be achieved if multinationals simply paid their fair share of tax.’
