A MOTORIST was pulled over by police on the M27 in a car he had just bought, as officers mistook him for someone else.

The white Vauxhall Insignia was stopped on the eastbound carriageway after it had passed Fareham at around 5pm yesterday.

Hampshire Police pulled the car over and boxed it in at the side of the motorway, before realising the driver was not the person they were after.

He had bought the car at an auction earlier in the day and the vehicle caught police attention after being identified by a camera.

A police spokesman said: ‘The car was on the system because one of the previous owners police had wanted to speak to.

‘That is why it was picked up when it went through the camera. That is why we were alerted to it.

‘They spoke to the driver, he was able to prove it had been sold, and it wasn’t the person they hoped.’
