A SATELLITE part-built in Portsmouth was launched into space last night.

Astrium’s Ariane 5 launcher was used in French Guiana to put its Skynet 5D satellite into space.

It is to be used for military communications, and was commissioned by the Ministry of Defence.

The payload part of the satellite – the part which communicates with the ground – was made by Portsmouth engineers at Astrium in Broad Oak.
