DAEDALUS has been hailed as the key to regeneration as a government minister revealed a further £7m investment.

Housing minister Kris Hopkins visited the site in the Solent Enterprise Zone to see the nearly-completed Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Advanced Skills Training (CEMAST) at Lee-on-the-Solent today.

Mr Hopkins said: ‘There’s new businesses emerging and growing and that brings more confidence.

‘In fact we are so confident, there is additional money, another £7m, that the council has bid for and that we are supporting for a new road through the site which will open up a new section.’

The money will see a road link the CEMAST site to the waterfront, making it more attractive to marine businesses.

CEMAST, which is operated by Fareham College, hopes to train a highly-skilled workforce for the marine, aerospace and aviation industry.

It is in the Solent Enterprise Zone, a former MoD site, which is one of 24 enterprise zones set up nationally to boost the economy by bringing jobs.

A £5.3m business centre, the Innovation Centre, is being built nearby that would provide start-up businesses with a platform to set up in.

This latest announcement comes after government announced on Monday that the Solent LEP had been successful in its funding bid and will receive £124m, which it has earmarked to improve the area’s roads.

The Solent LEP said that sites such as the Solent Enterprise Zone were vital to improve the areas economy and played a key part in its bid being successful.

MP for Gosport Caroline Dinenage said: ‘It is such an important site for the local area. It is going to bring prosperity, jobs and skills.

‘Given that it was effectively a disused military airfield for so many years, it is great to see that it has a dynamic future ahead of it. It really is excellent.’
