Councillor Mark Hook said the sailing legend is a ‘tremendous ambassador’ for Gosport who has never been shy to champion his home.

He said: ‘Wherever Alex goes, he is proud to say that he comes from Gosport, so he is a tremendous ambassador for the borough. His determination, his enthusiasm, his inspiration for what can be achieved; if you are single-minded and determined.

‘Alex will always promote Gosport.’

Sir Keith Mills, the mastermind behind the London 2012 Olympics and the chief financial backer for Portsmouth’s America’s Cup World Series events in 2015 and 2016, joined Alex on his return to Gosport’s harbour.

Sir Keith said: ‘We are all very proud of Alex and what he has been able to achieve.

‘I don’t think many people realise how difficult the Vendee Globe is. Fewer people have done that than have gone to outer space.’
