Talks broke down after three days of discussions at which GTR tabled an eight-point compromise plan to stop the strike action.

The RMT said it would suspend next week’s action if the company gave guarantees on jobs.

A five-day strike is set to take place from Monday.

Passenger service director Angie Doll said: ‘We’re deeply disappointed and angry on behalf of our passengers at this stance, which will cause misery for our passengers and untold damage to the local economy.’
