PORTSMOUTH South MP Mike Hancock is backing a national brewery’s campaign to stop the government increasing the tax on beer.

Mr Hancock joined Wychwood Brewery, which makes Hobgoblin, as it called on the government to scrap the beer tax escalator, which increases the tax on beer by two per cent above the rate of inflation every year.

As part of its campaign the brewery wants to collect a petition with 10,000 signatures against the escalator.

Mr Hancock said: ‘This campaign is a step forward. By removing the beer duty escalator at the next budget, beer will be kept more affordable and go some way to supporting the British pub.’
