MP calls for more work to eliminate pay gap

Mrs Drummond, who sits on the women and equalities select committee, was speaking after the publication of the government’s response to its recommendations on the gap published last year.

The response said the government will fail to achieve its goal of eliminating the gender pay gap in a generation because it is concerned ministers are not effectively tackling the structural causes of it.

‘I welcome that the government wants to make progress on this important issue, but I do share many concerns that not enough is being done right now to tackle this inequality,’ said Mrs Drummond.

‘Private companies with more than 250 employees have to publish their gender pay data, but the committee asked for it to be companies with 50 people to publish within two years and this was not accepted. This is disappointing because the more transparent the gap is, the more it can be tackled.’
