MPs slam shamed firms for not paying staff

The government released a list of 360 firms across the UK that had underpaid thousands of workers a total of £1m.

On that list were Retro Hair & Beauty, in Portchester, that failed to pay £279.15 to one worker, BS Care Ltd, in Havant, that failed to pay £242.22 to two workers, Xingui Ltd trading as Jasmine House, Chichester, that failed to pay £649.38 to one worker and PMC Repair Specialists Ltd, Bognor Regis that failed to pay £128.96 to one worker.

Fareham MP Suella Fernandes said: ‘It’s totally unacceptable for businesses to exploit their staff by paying below the minimum wage – so it’s very troubling to see this happening in Fareham.

‘People in work are entitled to be paid at least the national living wage, so I welcome the naming and shaming of employers that fail to meet this basic obligation.’

Havant MP Alan Mak said: ‘Thankfully most businesses are responsible when it comes to paying minimum wage, but people should always be vigilant and report firms breaching the law. Every employee deserves to be fairly paid for their hard work.’

Retro Hair & Beauty said it was over a dispute about an apprentice’s travel expenses, BS Care said it was due to a misunderstanding and PMC said it was due to a payroll system malfunction. Xingui Ltd did not respond.
