Nats resubmits plans for radar tower at Daedalus

PLANS for a new 25-metre high radar tower on Daedalus airfield have been resubmitted due to changes over location.

Nats submitted the full planning application for the tower at Lee-on-the-Solent on Tuesday. It previously had plans for the tower approved at a site nearer homes on Bayntun Drive.

However, due to unforeseen technical difficulties, the location has been revised to the north of the enterprise zone.

It will be placed within an enclosure due to the interest of safety and access to the tower will be via Broom Way.

The radar tower will be used as a training and test facility.

It had to be at a height of 25 metres to ensure enough clearance of the radar beam over the Isle of Wight and Portsdown Hill.

The noise at the base of the tower will be 63 decibels and Nats says that this will be ‘more than acceptable’ in the area and that it will not cause disturbances.

Nats had previously looked at Southampton Airport as an option for the tower.
