A Portsmouth lettings agent has welcomed new proposals to drive up standards and target rogue landlords in the private rented sector.
Chinneck Shaw, based in Tangier Road and Milton Road, says the Housing and Planning Bill could protect vulnerable tenants and benefit responsible landlords.
Neil Shaw, director at Chinneck Shaw, said: ‘Unscrupulous landlords are a minority but it is in everyone’s interest to drive them out of the industry.
‘We welcome any moves which will protect tenants, help responsible landlords and bring greater stability to the sector.
‘While some landlords may be forgiven for feeling under siege with continued governmental focus on the property market, this new bill has the potential to benefit the industry.
‘Enforcement, as ever, is the key. With local authorities shouldering much of the burden, allowing them to keep some of the fines may encourage them to take a proactive stance.’
