Six new restaurants and a nine-screen cinema were due to open today at Whiteley Shopping Centre after a preview evening was held last night.

The £18m complex has created at least 180 jobs and a range of activities will take place from 3pm today to mark the occasion.

Cineworld opened its 1,375-seat multiplex at midnight with a showing of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part Two.

Six restaurants - Five Guys, Nando’s, Pizza Express, Coast to Coast, Dim T and Wildwood Kitchen - also opened their doors for the first time today.

Shopping centre manager Neil Carter said: ‘The opening is a magnificently exciting time, not only for the centre, but for the surrounding growing community.’

Whiteley Shopping Centre opened in May 2013 and cost £84m to build.
