The editor of The News, Mark Waldron, kicked off the night with a warm welcome to all, with headline sponsor Trethowans’ Lucy Gleisner also giving an inspirational speech.

Mr Waldron said: ‘Each year we celebrate local business success whatever the challenges – and I realise that 2019 and even the start of 2020 has brought many businesses challenges in the form of extraordinary political and economic uncertainty.

‘But the awards have come at a very exciting time for the city. We recently reported on the fact we are set for a booming economy for the year ahead, with Portsmouth having the second-fastest economic growth rate among competitor cities. That is a fantastic place to be.'
