Park and Ride opens to commercial vehicles for free during Portsmouth lockdown

There are currently no buses running from the Portsmouth City Council site in Tipner.

But the authority has opened it to alleviate parking pressure on the streets as people stay home.

It comes after some key workers - including nurses and NHS workers - have struggled to find a space after their shifts.

The council is calling on commercial firms to park their cars at the site.

Anyone using it will have to make their own way home.

Cllr Lynne Stagg, cabinet member for transport and transportation, said 'Many frontline workers are finding it impossible to get a parking space when they finish often a 12-hour shift. Part of the problem is that now many businesses are shut there are additional commercial vehicles on our streets.

'We urge anyone with a commercial vehicle that is not being used to park for free at the Park and Ride in Tipner. This will give our frontline workers the opportunity to park with ease during this difficult time.'

As reported, two sisters proposed setting up a buddy system to give key workers a chance to find a parking space.

Residential parking zones have been lifted during the pandemic lockdown.
