POMPEY legend Alan Knight will at the opening event of the new Tesco Extra story in Fratton from 10am this morning.

The retailer is based right next to Fratton Park, on part of the Pompey’s former car park and opens officially from at 8am.

The Portsmouth FC legend is among one of the club’s players expected to be visting the shop on its opening day, with other players due to arrive at 2pm today.

Store manager Jon Roberts said: ‘As a team we have been working incredibly hard over the past few weeks and months and we can’t wait to welcome the local community to the store. There will be a lot of exciting things happening throughout the day that we are sure they will love.’

Other guests include the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Frank Jonas.

As well as shoppers being able to have a look around the new 64,000 sq ft building, customers will also be treated with display from dance group, Surrender Dance Academy, at 4pm.

There will be refreshments for those who attend as well as a chance to watch football stilt walkers and meet Portsmouth FC mascot, Nelson, who will pose for pictures with customers.

Mr Roberts will also be presenting £1,000 to Pompey in the Community.

Inside, the shop itself offers a range of products from Tesco’s clothing line F&F, to fruit, veg, dairy and bakery products.

There is also a café and community room which can be hired for functions by local organisations.

The new store opens from 6am to midnight Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

It employs about 350 staff – many of which live locally.
