Portsmouth factory invests in £500k press as part of expansion

AN ELECTRONICS component specialist has bought a £500,000 high-speed precision stamping press as part of its expansion plans.

Harwin, which manufactures connectors and hardware at its Fitzherbert Road factory in Portsmouth, took delivery of the BSTA 280-75 B2 from Bruderer UK this month.

The company is hoping the purchase will support its plans for 20 per cent growth year-on-year.

The new machine will help it increase capacity and develop new products for its international customer base.

Operations director Paul McGuinness said: ‘We specialise in high reliability connectors and innovative PCB hardware and are continually investing in our new product development programme.

‘This new acquisition will give our R&D team even greater capacity to bring the next generation of connectors to market.’

The company is also completing a 3,000sq metre factory extension.

Mr McGuiness continued: ‘This is the second Bruderer we’ve purchased. The first one had a major impact on the business, as it enabled us to do away with a separate development press.’

He said the new machine would also allow the company to identify issues before going to full production.

He continued: ‘There are lots of advantages, including increased efficiency, reduced costs and a reduction in machine shop space. In addition, the flexibility of the machine opens up possibilities for more complex formed stamped parts to be developed.’

Bruderer UK, which has offices in Luton and Birmingham, signed the £500,000 contract with Harwin during the MACH show, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham in April.

Adrian Haller, managing director at Bruderer, said: ‘It was the busiest show I have been to and we had lots of interest in our technology.

‘However, the headline news was completing a deal with Harwin to supply a second Bruderer BSTA 280-75 B2, two years on from when it first invested in this machine.

‘We have been working with the company for more than 32 years and understand the technical capability and accuracy it is looking to achieve. Two Bruderer presses will deliver this in abundance.’
