THE huge range of careers on offer in Portsmouth are to be showcased at a special event in September.

The date has been announced for the second annual Portsmouth Opportunities Fair, which aims to inspire young people and show them they can have a great career in the city.

It will take place on Saturday, September 29 at Portsmouth Guildhall, and is organised jointly by the Shaping the Future of Portsmouth organisation and the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Business and Education Partnership.

In the run-up to the event, the EBP is looking for 100 local businesses, training providers and colleges to participate.

Jaquie Jones, of the EBP, said: ‘We need businesses to prepare innovative, inspiring stands for the students and families.

‘We require engaging, interactive material that can spark and capture the imagination.

‘But much more importantly we need passionate and inspiring people from all businesses, at all levels, in all disciplines and skills sets and from all levels of experience and seniority who will come and directly engage with the participants.

‘The job of everyone participating will be to go home knowing that they inspired at least one child.

‘We plan to influence at least 2,000 attendees on the day.

‘We are searching for businesses – big and small, local, national and international.

‘Please come and join us and help to make this an event for the students to remember.’

The highlights of last year’s event included a stand from IBM, which featured a brain-powered toy car that youngsters could ‘think’ into moving.

There was entertainment throughout the day, and a quiz to help those visiting see everything on offer on the day.
