Portsmouth unemployment rate falls despite Covid-19 pressures on job market

THE number of people unemployed in Portsmouth has decreased despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Figures released today show that for October 2019 to September 2020, there were 4,400 people unemployed in Portsmouth.

Year-on-year, the rate of unemployment has improved by 0.2 per cent in the city from September 2019.

In Gosport, unemployment has improved by 0.1 per cent over that time, with a similar figure in Havant.

The unemployment rate in Fareham has remained constant, data shows.

Generally, the job market in the south east region has improved the most out of any region in England, with the lowest rate of unemployment,

It comes as other regions, such as London, struggle with job losses, with a quarterly unemployment increase of 1.7 per cent.

Nationally, economic inactivity fell by 0.1 percentage points, from 20.8 per cent to 20.7 per cent. It is up by 0.2 percentage points on the same time last year.
