EUROPE’S largest space company has made a giant splash after donating £1,350 to ensure youngsters at a primary school continue to take part in after-school swimming lessons.

Portsmouth-based Astrium made the generous offer following calls from Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt on behalf of children at Somers Park Primary.

The swimming lessons at Charter Academy were previously funded by the Pompey Stars scheme which had its funding cut several months ago.

But thanks to Astrium, lessons for children in one of the most deprived areas of the city will run for at least another year.

Miss Mordaunt said: ‘This is another example where private companies have stepped up to the plate to help the wider community.’

Colin Paynter, chief executive at Astrium UK, said: ‘We are delighted that young people from our city will continue to benefit from these lessons.’
