Poundland slammed for selling toy knives aimed at kids for Halloween

A high street retailer is stocking realistic looking toy knives aimed at children '“ despite axing kitchen blades due to knife crime epidemic.Â

Poundland are selling glow in the dark 'weapons' including butchers blades as props for Halloween. 

The discount retailer has stores in Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham and Havant.

While the knives are plastic, they have come under fire from campaigners who have labelled them '˜mindless'.

The Sun reports that the found of the Chayah Project, which aims to  to tackle knife violence among young people, was '˜mortified'. 

Hyacinth Francis, 55, said: '˜They should not be promoting knives to kids.

'˜It is not a toy even if it is plastic. It is also in the face of people who have lost their children to knife crime.

'˜If police saw someone with it they would not know if it is a fake or real one either. It is mindless. I can't believe it.'

Poundland has stopped selling kitchen blades at stores in London and the West Midlands earlier this year due to the knife crime epidemic. 

And the discount retailer will be axing knives from all of its stores nationwide by the end of September. 

A spokesman for the company said: '˜We share their concern on knife crime.

'˜That's why no-one is doing more than Poundland.

'˜By the end of this month we'll be the only high street retailer to completely remove kitchen knives from all of our stores nationwide.

'˜This, however, is just a glow-in-the-dark yellow plastic toy for Halloween.'
