BUDGET retailer Poundland has announced that it wants to open a new store at Whiteley Shopping Centre.
Whiteley Town Council chairman Mike Evans said there had been a mixed reaction to the news but that it would be ‘interesting’ to see its impact.
He said: ‘When I was first told about it I was surprised but I think on the whole it will go down well.
‘There’s no reason why it would not do well but it will be interesting to see how it affects people using it and the other shops.’
Whiteley Shopping Centre opened in May 2013 and is undergoing an expansion which will see a nine-screen multiplex cinema and five restaurants open later this year.
Centre manager Neil Carter said the cinema was progressing well and is expected to be finished in October.
He said the centre was also doing well, with a new Specsavers store set to open on August 17 and Smiggle, a stationery store, opening last month.
Mr Carter said: ‘We have had numerous requests for Poundland to open at Whiteley and I’m very pleased to finally see them sign.
‘Their offer complements the current retail offer perfectly, and I look forward to the opening ahead of the new Cineworld and additional restaurants later this year.’
Poundland has more than 590 stores nationwide, which sell more than 3,500 products including brand names.
It will be the first single-price value retailer to open at the centre.
Poundland’s trading director, Richard Lancaster, said: ‘Poundland has grown significantly over the past 12 months and it’s fantastic to see this expansion continuing.
‘The nearest Poundland is in Fareham which is nearly four miles away, so we wanted to give residents a more convenient store in their area.
‘We’re looking forward to opening our doors.’
The store is currently recruiting, although a spokesman could not tell The News how many positions it would be hiring.
Rival Poundworld announced that it would like to open in Gosport earlier this week.
