THE company that provides water to Portsmouth and Hampshire has revealed it fixed more than 22,000 leaks across the south east last year.

Southern Water, which supplies water across Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, said it was a record number, as in 2009-10 it fixed 17,200, and said harsh winters lead to the leaks.

A £20m leak reduction programme launched in April last year helped to detect the problems.

A further £20m will be spent on the scheme.
