A MOVE that will see thousands of Southern Rail passengers compensated has been welcomed by an MP.

It comes following weeks of chronic delays, cancellations and misery for passengers travelling on Southern trains last year.

To qualify for compensation, customers must have held at least 12 weeks’ worth of season tickets between April 1 and December 31.

Suella Fernandes, Fareham MP, said: ‘This move will provide some welcome relief for the thousands of Southern customers who have been affected by the extraordinary disruption.

‘I’d urge those who have not yet applied for compensation to do so before the deadline on April 30.’

In a letter to MPs last week, Paul Maynard MP, a Department for Transport spokesman, said: ‘Southern Railway have been managing the process of identifying and contacting tens of thousands of customers who registered their contact details.

‘However this is a complex process and there will be people eligible for compensation who have not been contacted. Southern are now asking anyone who has not been contacted to get in touch via an online claim form on their website.’
