The cafe chain opened its latest store in a former laundrette in Albert Road, Southsea, today.

The 2,000 sq ft Costa store, which initially attracted some opposition from residents who feared it would detract business from the road’s independent traders, attracted scores of customers who were keen to check out the new offering. The cafe, which has created eight new jobs, will be officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Cllr David Fuller on Saturday morning.

It is being run by Costa franchise partner Premier Coffee, which also runs stores in Emsworth, Cowplain and Stubbington, plus more.

Store manager Jenni Speight said: ‘It’s a really nice big spacious store.

‘We’ve had really good feedback so far, customers are really happy with their drinks and they love how big and bright it is in here.’

The branch has sponsored Portsmouth South Girlguiding, in particular several Brownies and Guide units which meet in Albert Road every week.

A cheque will be presented to Lexa Wokersien, Portsmouth South Division Commissioner, at the official opening.

Lexa said: ‘I’m delighted that Costa has chosen to support Portsmouth South Girlguiding and the wonderful work we do with Rainbows, Brownies and Guides in Southsea.

‘We’ll be able to use the money to help fund unit camps, activity days and a host of other activities which encourage our young people to try new things, meet other children and learn independent skills.’

The store is also giving out 35,000 buy-one-get-one-free vouchers in and around Southsea.
