Shares fell sharply for a second session in a row yesterday as fears over global economic currents were compounded by big declines for major blue-chip firms Vodafone and BG.

The FTSE 100 Index was off by more than 90 points after losing more than 100 on Friday - when investors had been spooked by the spectre of a crisis sweeping emerging markets.
