Shops aim to cut plastic packaging waste in store

SUPERMARKETS in the area are bidding to cut waste.

Five Aldi stores in Portsmouth and the surrounding area have joined in the chain's use of recyclable clear trays on its fresh fruit and vegetables.

The company hopes to save 265 tonnes of plastic waste each year.

Black plastic currently used cannot be sifted out of household waste.

Fritz Walleczek, managing director of corporate Responsibility at Aldi UK, said: '˜Cutting waste is part of Aldi's DNA and we have a longstanding commitment to minimise our impact on the environment.'
