This Solent fort could be yours for £875,000

A Solent fort which has stood at the edge of Portsmouth for nearly 150 years will be going under the hammer today.

Horse Sand Fort is being sold by Lambert Smith Hampton auctioneers with a guide price of £875,000.

The fort was completed in 1880 and cost £425,000.

It was originally used as a military fort to protect the city against the French, but because it took 15 years to complete it was barely needed to help against the invasion.

The fort was rearmed during the two world wars before being deemed surplus to requirements by the Ministry of Defence in the 1960s.

Advertising on Right Move, its marketers say the fort ‘enjoys unrestricted sea views across the Solent to Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight and out to sea.’

It adds: ‘The fort would offer residents the ultimate in seclusion, fantastic views and a rare chance to reside offshore in a unique location.’

The auction begins at 11am today with the fort expected to be sold later this afternoon.
