South West Trains apologises for major delays to Portsmouth trains

South West Trains has apologised to customers who faced long delays to services to and from Portsmouth yesterday.

Passengers had been warned to expect delays of up to an hour because of weather conditions, signalling failures and other incidents.

The company had previously said trains in the Portsmouth area had been delayed because of wet leaves on the track.

In a statement SWT head of customer experience Christian Neill said he was ‘very sorry’ for the disruption.

He added: ‘We had a number of incidents which caused disruption on our network, including poor railhead conditions at numerous locations across our network.

‘Whilst we worked as quickly as possible to minimise the effect of these incidents on your journey, the build-up of congested trains and knock-on delays meant we had needed to alter and cancel train services.

‘I know how frustrating it is when your train service doesn’t run as planned.

‘I appreciate your continued patience and I am very sorry for the difficulties you may have faced on your journey yesterday.’

He said that the company had organised rail replacement transport and arranged for transport to be accepted by other transport companies.
