Southsea's Cafe au Cinema pays tribute to customers ahead of closure

A TRENDY cinema-cum-coffee house has paid tribute to its customers after announcing it will close it doors this July.

Cafe au Cinema opened up on Southsea’s Osborne Road last August but will have to close up shop due to ‘insurmountable circumstances.’

Genevieve Keay, who runs the quirky business, opened the shop as a way to bring a different movie experience to shoppers in Southsea with customers able to pull up a beanbag and watch classic films with friends while sipping on the shop’s signature Unicorn Latte.

She said she was ‘crushed’ to announce the shop’s closure in a statement.

It read: ‘We are crushed to announce the closure of our mini-cinema and coffee house.

‘Due to insurmountable circumstances, we are no longer able to continue trading. Our final date will follow. This is likely to be around July, but we wanted to give everyone forward notice of our sad news. We have always strived to put our heart and soul into everything we do and be a little different.

‘We wanted to share our love of film and movies at our quirky venue in the heart of Southsea.’

The statement offered thanks to those who had supported the small business over the last year.

It added: ‘We are eternally grateful for all your love. Without our amazingly supportive customers, friends and family, we would not have made it this far. A massive thank you to everyone who has supported us. It has been a real pleasure.’

Despite the shop’s closure, Genevieve is looking to branch out into the popcorn business with the launch of a new brand called Popcorn de Cinema.
