COUNCILLORS have given the thumbs up to plans for branding by Emirates to be displayed on the Spinnaker Tower.
A special planning committee was held at Portsmouth Guildhall this morning.
It related to the display of illuminated and non-illuminated signage with individual lettering, logos and branding on the tower legs and ground floor facilities.
Councillor Donna Jones, leader of Portsmouth City Council, shared her views in front of committee members.
She said: ‘I think that the design is sensitive to the local heritage assets.
‘It’s good to redesign an iconic building to give it a fresh impact.
‘I think this is a very positive association. It compliments Gunwharf very well. It’s a very strong and positive brand association.’
But Cllr Lee Hunt disagreed and said: ‘This design solution really isn’t the answer. It’s huge and overbearing.
‘The use of the word Emirates right up the side of the tower for people to see from miles away has an adverse impact on the visual amenities of the area.’
It comes after the airline giant secured the naming rights to the tower last month.
