A YEAR of working for local good causes is what’s in store for employees of insurance giant Zurich, which has its headquarters in Whiteley.

The programme is called Challenge 2013, and will see staff in Whiteley spend time on tasks requested by a number of local organisations and charities in need of additional support or assistance.

Challenges are spread across Hampshire and fall into categories including gardening, decorating and DIY, entertainment, days out and offering a helping hand.

Steve Grimmett, community involvement programme manager, said: ‘There is a total of 63 Hampshire challenges to choose from this year, and they include a broad range of activities such as developing a sensory garden for the children at a special needs school in Fareham; providing food and household items to the Portsmouth Welfare Association for families with financial difficulties; and providing a fun day out for Portsmouth Young Carers – children who look after a parent or sibling.’

He said the challenge is now in its 24th year.
